Collect documents from the proceedings so far
Bring the claim, defence, subsequent submissions, orders and judgments you have. Include the attachments. If you have hearing records or confirmations of service, bring those too.
Note upcoming dates
Note scheduled hearings and other procedural steps. For documents requiring a response, record the date received and the deadline stated. Mention these when booking your consultation.
Separate agreed matters from disputed issues
Briefly set out what has already been agreed and what still needs discussion. If the case concerns children, bring current arrangements for care, contact and expenses.
Prepare questions about further assistance
Note which documents or events need explaining and what support you need. I also accept cases where proceedings are already underway; the scope of further assistance is agreed after reviewing the documents.
Agree how to provide documents
At first contact, state the general subject and any upcoming deadlines. Agree with the practice how to provide the full documentation.
This practical guide helps you prepare for a consultation. It does not replace an assessment of your individual case.
